Miley Cyrus reveals fiery clash behind her MTV VMAs performance

The 27-year-old singer performed her new song Midnight Sky during the prerecorded telecast of the annual awards show, and in her final moments jumped on a wrecking ball in a nod to her iconic 2013 song and film clip.

It was one of the highlights of the show, but Cyrus said behind the scenes she had clashed with one of the directors who she says told her: “We wouldn‘t be dealing with this if a guy was doing it”.

Speaking to Joe Rogan on his Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where she also admitted to feeling villainised in the wake of her split with Liam Hemsworth, Cyrus said she was trying to have a creative discussion with the director before it turned sour.

“I was just asking some questions, not even on some diva s**t,” she said. “I wanted the lights to be turned off and then the lighting of the room to just be lighting me. So no key light, no beauty light.

“The beauty light is always used on women and I said turn the f***ing lights off. You would never tell Travis Scott or Adam Levine that he couldn’t turn the beauty light off.

“They said, ‘Okay, we’ll just do the same thing that we would do with the guys’ – because that’s what I want,” she continued.

“And then something that I was doing for the VMAs, my bracelets kept getting caught in all this s**t and they said, ‘You want to be treated like a guy? We wouldn’t be dealing with this if a guy was doing it’.”

MTV has not commented on the incident.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cyrus told Rogan going through her divorce in the public realm “f***ing sucked”, and that she felt villainised for moving on too quickly, in reference to her fleeting romance with reality star Kaitlynn Carter and subsequent eight month relationship with Cody Simpson.

“What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realised that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore. That’s OK, I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainising, and just all those stories,” she said.

“It’s amazing to me the public thinks that there’s no gap of time that they didn’t see that could possibly be what led to this.

“It’s not, ‘One day you were happy on the carpet and the next day you were making out with your friend in Italy, what the f**k?’ There’s a lot of time in between that you didn’t see.”
